Escape to Tsowa Safari Island: A Zambezi River Oasis

Nestled in the heart of the Zambezi National Park, amidst the wild beauty and soothing sounds of Zimbabwe’s fast flowing Zambezi River, Tsowa Safari Island offers a unique and intimate luxury safari experience near the legendary Victoria Falls. Just getting here is an adventure. Your safari guide awaits to transport you through the Zambezi National Park, passing a gamut of wildlife en route, to Africa’s most majestic river, the Zambezi, where a boat sits ready to you which you across to your private island retreat, Tsowa Safari island—and what a fabulous way to get to a lodge.

Set within the 56,000-hectare Zambezi National Park, the island is discreetly tucked into trees that fringe the river bank and located far enough upstream to be completely undisturbed by other lodges or the Victoria Falls helicopters The private uninhabited island provides a sanctuary for those seeking a connection with nature and an escape from the everyday world within a luxury tented camp — a castaway fantasy and a destination in its own right. And a warm welcome from the Tsowa team.

The Main Lodge

A short walk takes you past the swimming pool and loungers to the main lodge which consists of three open sided pavilions that includes an elegant, unpretentious, and inviting salon backdropped by a wall painting of Victoria Falls, and groupings of comfy seating, with a colonial aesthetic injected with a contemporary touch is flanked by a dining and a drinks pavilions all with an adjoining riverfront terrace, and a step down fire pit deck overlooking the Zambezi River, and perfect for aperitif as you immerse in the sounds and sights of the river and its wildlife life float by, the larger species and their smaller noisier counterparts, the cicada and frogs.

The Essence of Exceptional Hospitality

Beyond the stunning setting, Tsowa is renowned for its exceptional service and the dedication of its staff, and guides, who share their stories, and knowledge of the local wildlife and culture. Their genuine warmth and commitment makes you feel special and cared for.

The Tented Rooms

Tsowa is also about relaxation and indulgence. After a day filled with exploration, returning to your spacious tented suite is so good —each tent is a private oasis featuring comfortable bedding, plush furnishings, and breathtaking river views. Choose from a River View and a River Deck — they are essentially the same, but the river deck has a raised deck over the river edge. The beds are draped in luxurious linens. They have a bathroom with a shower as well as an invigorating outdoor shower.

Do keep in mind the lodge is off-grid and, therefore, has no air conditioning (there is a Dyson fan, should you need it; however, we found it unnecessary). There is a turndown service, but we requested they leave the tent flaps up, allowing a cool breeze to circulate freely, knowing that all windows and doors have mosquito netting. This also allows you to wake up as the sun rises over the Zambezi, accompanied by a beautiful play of light over the tent through the tree canopy and the sounds of the dawn chorus from the many birds in the area. The tent stayed cool, and we slept well after our action-packed days and delicious food.

A Symphony For the Senses

Imagine waking up in a secluded haven, embraced by a lush forest set under a beautiful canopy of of enormous Jakalberry trees, giant termite mounds, and ancient baobab trees that are a testament to the passage of time and the enduring spirit of nature. The gentle murmur of the Zambezi River, and the whispers of the African bush, the calls of exotic birds, the trumpets of the elephants, and the roars of the hippos provide an exotic surround sound, as you start your day, with dappled sunlight dancing across every surface. Days start with a delicious breakfast before heading out for a morning of adventure— a boat safari gliding along the river with the wildlife by your side, past cavorting hippos and crocodiles, giraffe, and elephant, and whatever may chance to show itself along the way. Fishing or kayaking on along the river, or a game drive through the national park.

Adventures on the Zambezi

The guides lead you through the wonders of the African bush in the national park, revealing the secrets of the animal kingdom—from majestic elephants and graceful giraffes to cunning leopards and mighty lions and various bird species guided flatbed vehicle drives allow for close encounters with diverse wildlife. Fishing Anglers can even try their luck in catching the famed tiger fish and bream.

Safari Excursions

Accompanied by experienced guides, take a walking safari tour through the bush to learn about flora, fauna, and the ecosystem. Alternatively, explore the Zambezi River by boat, giving you a chance to see hippos, crocodiles, and vibrant birdlife. For those seeking a more tranquil experience, canoeing safaris on the Zambezi River offer a unique perspective on the surrounding beauty. Gliding gently through the peaceful waters, observing the diverse birdlife and the rich tapestry of the river ecosystem. Sunset river cruises are particularly magical. They offer a symphony of colours as the sun dips below the horizon, casting its golden glow on the rippling water and over the surrounding landscape.

For Opacarophile Lovers

The sunsets at Tsowa are pretty magical, especially from a Tsowa river boat, a sundowner in hand, as you glide along the river as it glistens like a gold ribbon, reflecting the fiery skies above while watching the few island locals come out in the cool of the day to play and sit by the river, the children playing by their side. Or sipping cocktails on the deck of your luxurious safari tent or by the roaring fire as you watch the sky transition through vibrant hues of orange, purple, and pink.

Astro-Tourism

The star-filled skies when the moon is not full are mesmerising. Look out for shooting stars. From your bed, you may hear the sound of lions calling and elephants trumpeting.
