When does a restaurant become more than just a restaurant? Is it when the destination in question contains a dining experience, hybrid bar, private lounge and rooftop terrace?
Perhaps it is when the artwork that helps shape and define a space changes and some of the world’s top DJs transform the sultry space into a more hedonistic haven.
Or perhaps it is the fusion of the building’s heritage and the inspiration behind the new venture that makes a restaurant more than just a restaurant.
Whatever the criteria, one can be assured that Onima is just that – more than just a restaurant.
Nestled in London’s Mayfair area, Onima plays to the desire in offering beyond just a dining experience. A Mediterranean-Asian restaurant located off the luxury-shopping thoroughfare of Central London’s Bond Street, Onima has taken residence in a five-storey Mayfair townhouse. A townhouse that was previously occupied by Cartier, the luxury watchmakers.
Inspired by the whitewashed, sea-splashed vision of a ‘dreamer from Greece’, Onima brings the spirit of Mykonos to London. One would be naive to expect cobbled paving stones, terracotta pots and windmills here though. Designed by leading Greek interior designers Archset, the restaurant instantly transports you to a sensory space.
Polished, stylish and flooded with natural light, the ground floor space is dominated by an imposing bar with sumptuous bronze details. Velvet-clad armchairs and sofas, surrounded by a regularly changing art collection that reflects the city’s ‘state-of-mind’ fills the restaurants carefully lit dining space.
From ground floor to first, Onima transports you to an evermore-engaging area. Colourful mirrors, smooth metals and blue-hue fabrics add depth and intrigue to the second dining floor.
Emboldened by its desire to be more than just a place one frequents to dine in an evening, Onima plays spiritedly on all five senses. It looks to bring together great food, decadent drinks, unique service, a positive energy and strong personality.
One must not forget the reason for frequenting in the first place though. Onima’s standout offerings from the decadent menu include starters of King crab salad with caviar with yuzu and truffle dressing, Josper grilled octopus with Mediterranean salsa and Stuffed courgette flowers with feta, ricotta and anchovies.
Main course choices include Scottish lobster taglioni with cherry tomatoes, “Guazzetto” stew with Sicilian prawns, red mullet and baby courgettes and a Roasted Greek seabass for two.
Finally the deserts, presented in artistic arrangements, include Traditional Baklava with pistachio cream and vanilla ice cream, Reconstructed lemon tart and an Aglaia favourite, Chocolate cookies semifreddo with caramel salé sauce.
Pairing with such a fusion of flavours sees Onima’s award winning sommelier oversee an impressive collection of wines and champagnes. For something a little more exotic Onima’s mixologists would point you towards a beguiling blend of mezcal & grapefruit, cardamom, prickly pear, aquafaba & soda. Principally known as the Purple Rain cocktail.
Now open, Onima will continue to embolden its sensory surroundings with the addition of an intimate private lounge complete with striking fireplace and a breath taking glass-enclosed rooftop terrace.
So when does a restaurant become more than just a restaurant…we’ll leave that for you to decide.
