Following on from the first collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Jeff Koons earlier this year, a second collaboration has been announced with the pieces launching on 27th October 2017. The collection was inspired by Koons’ “Gazing Ball” series which began in 2013.
With the initial collection striking a love or hate reaction, it’s likely the second collection will produce similar emotions. Although well-meaning with the aim of the collaboration to increase appreciation of great masterpieces, the name of each artist emblazoned on the front of the handbags and purses in chunky metal, is gaudy in appearance and takes away from the beauty of the art. However, this is what happens when you combine the modernity of Koons’ style with the beauty and skill of Monet.
It’s important to remember though that the pieces aren’t necessarily aimed at art-lovers, and instead are aimed at the Louis Vuitton customers who perhaps haven’t had as much exposure to the works of Boucher or Turner.
The second collection will include; Reclining Girl by François Boucher; Delightful Land by Paul Gauguin; Luncheon on the Grass by Edouard Manet; Water Lilies by Claude Monet; The Triumph of Pan by Nicolas Poussin; and Ancient Rome by J.M.W. Turner.
