Set beside the swimming pool of the famed five-star hotel, Hotel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes – the grand dame of Cannes’ star-studded summer scene – is Fouquet’s. A fine dining restaurant adorned with white linen table cloths, where the interior blends with the exterior, allowing guests to dine within either and still feel very much apart of the same restaurant.
It was mid-September when we visited and blindingly hot given the time of year. The 28-degree heat did not deter us from sitting outside and enjoying the breeze however, and the sun shades covering the entire outside area was very much appreciated. We had high hopes for such a well regarded restaurant in Cannes, especially considering we dined at one of Cannes’ oldest and most famous restaurants among locals the evening before. We were not disappointed.
We began with a mouthwatering Octopus with chorizo and pumpkin veloute. Beautifully cooked and thankfully not overdone as is so often the case with octopus, this was actually our favourite dish of the meal (not to say the rest of the meal should have been missed – far from it). The brasserie-style menu has been created by Pierre Gagnaire, and is famous for it’s fresh grilled fish and risottos – a tribute to nearby Provence, with a Mediterranean touch.
Moving on to mains we chose a forgettable salad, and the Pepper black beef fillet with cabbage fondue, champs-elysees sauce, and mashed potato. Whilst the salad was forgettable, the beef fillet certainly was not. Cooked medium-rare, both the steak and the mashed potato melted in your mouth, with the mash being undoubtedly the creamiest mashed potato I have ever had. I still dream about that mashed potato and wish I could have had another portion it was that good.
Despite being full to bursting from the humungous steak, you can’t dine at Fouquet’s and not try one of their exceptional desserts. We opted for the traditional millefeuille with the most perfect flaky pastry, and a panna cotta with fresh strawberries adorning the top layer, and despite feeling as though we may actually burst, it was worth it.
There is no doubt about it, Fouquet’s is very ‘Cannes’, it the epitome of sophistication, and is everything I ever imagined Cannes to be; glamorous, pricey, and with a hint of old-age nostalgia. We did find it slightly strange watching guests splash about in the pool whilst we sipped on a Chablis and ate our weight in fine food, however the food was superb, and the service even better. But it’s the atmosphere and entire experience that we really loved – with people-watching opportunities galore – and why you really should book a table for your next visit to the star-studded seaside town.
