The Grenadines are often known as the epitome of luxury. The collection of Caribbean islands are home to numerous celebrity residences and vacation favourites, in particular among the Royals. But are private islands in the Caribbean reserved only for the famous? Step forward, The Palm Island Resort.
A part of Elite Island Resorts, the eco-friendly Palm Island is a private island with just 43 villas. This is barefoot luxury at its finest. Forget the latest tech; there are no televisions in the rooms and wifi is only accessible in the lobby and library. Palm Island is not the place to catch up on some work of an afternoon, it’s a place to switch off and completely recharge the batteries.
Arriving at Palm Island Resort
Right from the moment you land at the tiny airport on Union Island, you are reminded to take things slow. You’re taken from the airport to the dock by golf buggy, before being whizzed over to Palm Island by boat. Standing on the dock are a line of people ready and waiting to greet you; staff and guests. You’re handed a cocktail, and shown to your room while your luggage follows behind.
Rooms & Villas at Palm Island Resort
For the ultimate luxury experience we recommend booking The Southern Cross villa. With it’s private infinity pool and terrace overlooking the ocean, it’s the ideal place to while away a week or two sipping on cocktails and indulging in a good book.
Dining at Palm Island
When it’s time for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or one of the many activities both on and off the island, you have your very own golf buggy ready and waiting for you out the front of your villa. The food here is impressive, with a wide variety of freshly caught fish, as well as a number of meat and veggie options. There are also an abundance of friendly iguanas on the island, which make every breakfast an interesting one.
Things to do on Palm Island
The activities provided are one of the main selling points of the resort. Go swimming with sea turtles in the nearby Tobago Cays on a day trip aboard the Pink Lady schooner, watch Pirates of the Caribbean on the beach surrounded by the islands where it was filmed, go snorkelling on one of the islands five beaches, hire a hobie cat or paddle-board (included in your room rate), or work off the calories from the delicious food by heading to the gym.
The Palm Island Tranquility Spa is exceptional, Veronica the masseuse made every ache and pain disappear within an hour, and I left feeling as though I were floating. What really is special about Palm Island is the staff. When thinking out loud ‘I’d love some coconut water right now!’ I had no idea that I would return to the villa to find a bottle of fresh coconut water sitting in the fridge. And when bitten by mosquitos (they do provide mosquito spray – I just hadn’t used it), I found a plate of freshly cut aloe vera waiting for me on the table to soothe them.
Service & Verdict
The attention to detail and the way the staff know exactly when to help and when to act like a friend is incredible. It was without a doubt one of the most special experiences of my life, and it was mainly because of the staff…although the location did help too. The island is quite literally paradise, and if you’re in need of a week of relaxation in breathtaking surroundings, I can’t recommend the Palm Island Resort enough.
