The European Christmas Markets You Need To Visit

Budapest christmas markets

The European Christmas Markets are just a month away from opening, and it’s not too late to book a last-minute trip to get your Festive fix; think mulled wine, gingerbread hearts, beer, and all the snow! Whether you’re coming from outside of Europe or are a European wanting a quick Christmas Market city break, these are our top picks…

Zagreb, Croatia

Despite being further south than the more traditional Christmas Markets in Europe, Zagreb is one of the most famous, and the most impressive. The market takes place on the streets surrounding the Jelacic Square, and has a variety of seasonal gifts, gingerbread hearts, cookies, colorful decorations, jewelry and souvenirs.

Munich, Germany

Munich is the closest German city to Neuschwanstein Castle, so spend a day at the markets drinking beer and eating Bavarian Bratwurst, and then take a day trip to Neuschwanstein to see it in the snow in all its wintry glory. After spending your days out and about, head back to the Mandarin Oriental Munich to rest your weary legs.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna is one of the largest Christmas Markets in Europe, with a giant lit-up Christmas tree, multiple markets spread across the city, and an unrivaled festive atmosphere. The modern day Christmas Markets in Vienna date back to 1298, when Albrecht I allowed Vienna’s citizens to hold a December Market or “Krippenmarkt”.  Take a look at our Top Luxury Hotels in Vienna to find your perfect hotel.

Budapest, Hungary

Stay at the Four Seasons Gresham Palace and spend your weekend feasting on Hungarian Chimney Cake, wandering the Christmas markets in search of gifts for loved ones, and bathing in the Szechenyi Thermal Baths. There’s plenty to see and do in Budapest alongside the markets, meaning 3-4 days in Hungary’s Capital is ideal.

Krakow, Poland

The Krakow market begins on the last week of November and runs until 24th December, when the city is usually cloaked in a blanket of snow. A small picturesque city that looks like its come straight out of a Children’s fairytale, Krakow will provide you with the romanticised whimsical Christmas Market of your dreams.

Prague, Czech Republic

The Prague Christmas Market is held in Wenceslaus Square, which was named after the same Wenceslaus from the famous Christmas Carol. Explore the winter wonderland of Prague, take a traditional horse and carriage ride through the city, and be sure to stay at the Four Seasons for classic luxury, or Alchymist Castle Suites for an opulent and romantic stay.
