Perth’s Most Expensive Hotel: COMO The Treasury

In the very heart of Perth’s city centre is a hotel so beautiful it genuinely took my breath away as soon as I stepped inside. Located within the city’s 19th-century Old Treasury Buildings (now called the State Buildings after extensive renovation and refurbishment), COMO The Treasury opened in 2015 and quickly became notorious for being the most expensive hotel in Perth, an accolade it still holds despite the more recent openings of Crown Towers and the Ritz-Carlton. But what you lose from your bank balance, you gain in experience and comfort. My short-but-sweet city stay quickly became one of my favourite staycations, ever, and I was completely wowed by the impressive service and design features of COMO The Treasury.

The Lobby and Check-in Experience

Enter the hotel from the small side-street beside St George’s Cathedral, and you’ll instantly be whisked into the small but cosy lobby, with plush seating and tables covered in native flowers, and one lone check-in desk, highlighting the boutique size of this luxury hotel. With just 48 contemporary rooms and suites, the hotel is small and select, with only the most discerning guests. The staff are cheery and welcoming, and the light and airy space is reflective of the majority of the hotel, which was designed by Kerry Hill.

The Rooms at COMO The Treasury

An elevator takes you to a dimly-lit corridor with largely-spaced apart doors leading to the guest rooms. Even the smallest guest rooms at COMO The Treasury are an average of 55sq m, with the largest suite measuring a humongous 120sq m. Walking into my elegant Heritage Balcony Room I was in shock by the size and space before me. It was without a doubt the biggest ‘standard’ hotel room I had ever seen, and beautifully designed too, with light-hued furniture and natural light flooding in from the original oversized windows.

The room had everything you could need; a comfortable King-sized bed with Egyptian cotton bed-linen, a table and chairs, large desk, and a sofa on which to relax. The mini-bar features local wine from the Margaret River wine region, and complimentary snacks (the lemon biscuits were a favourite) and cold and hot drinks. And then there’s the bathroom; a swoon-worthy room of beautiful travertine stone tiles with a twin vanity, and a floor-space large enough for a plethora of activities (cartwheels, anyone?). Relax in the deep bathtub with the provided COMO Shambhala at Home aromatherapy bath-salts, and then dry off with the plushest towels.

And when it’s time to sleep? Press a button and the electronic sheer blinds and blackout Roman curtains will block out the Perth sunshine.

My only complaint is the lack of charging points next to the bed – I had to charge my phone over the other side of the room at the desk which is just annoying. Having been opened in 2015, you just expect charger points next to the bed in a luxury property.

Food and Drink

There are a variety of eateries and bars in the State Buildings making COMO The Treasury an incredible location for foodies. With fine-dining restaurant Wildflower on the rooftop and trendy Thai restaurant Long Chim in underground, there really is something for everyone. Although a delicious breakfast is available with the hotel, make sure you stop by Petition Kitchen for breakfast one morning – their French Toast is divine!

Swimming Pool and Facilities

With a focus on wellness, COMO provide guests with a tranquil spa, COMO Shambhala Urban Escape, and a space to practice yoga and pilates (each room comes equipped with a yoga mat) with daily classes. As well as the spa treatment facilities, the hotel also has a stunning 20m heated indoor pool and a state-of-the-art techno gym.

Verdict

COMO The Treasury is a contemporary bolthole that has managed to retain and show-off it’s 140-year heritage characteristics through the smart architectural and design features Kerry Hill has created. It’s a beautiful hotel whose high price tag is completely justified – something quite rare in the travel industry – and it’s undoubtedly Perth’s most exclusive and luxurious property. COMO The Treasury is true gem within a flourishing hotel scene in Australia’s most underrated city, and should be on every traveller’s ‘hotel bucket list’.
