The Gallery at City Winery NYC Unveils ‘Bob Gruen: Rock Seen’

The Gallery at City Winery NYC has announced Bob Gruen: Rock Seen, an extraordinary exhibition showcasing the work of Bob Gruen, one of rock and roll’s most esteemed photographers. Known for his captivating images that have defined the genre’s visual landscape, Gruen’s work includes some of the most iconic photographs in music history. The exhibit opens its doors on March 1st, 2024 and runs through April 30th, offering visitors an unparalleled journey through five decades of music history.

Bob Gruen’s illustrious career has immortalized moments of raw energy and emotion, capturing the likes of John Lennon in his legendary New York City t-shirt, Led Zeppelin in front of their private jet, and Sid Vicious with a hot dog in hand — an image that is now in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London. Gruen’s photographs have adorned magazine covers, posters, and even postage stamps across the globe. With 15 books to his name, including Rock Seen, John Lennon: The New York Years, Green Day: Photographs by Bob Gruen, and his autobiography, Right Place, Right Time: The Life of a Rock & Roll Photographer, his work continues to inspire and resonate with audiences worldwide.

City Winery, founded in 2008 by Michael Dorf, delivers a unique culinary and cultural experience to urban wine enthusiasts passionate about music. Each City Winery offers intimate concerts, upscale dining, private event spaces, and a fully functioning winery. To date, City Winery has a number of locations in eight cities across the United States and in 2020 City Winery opened a Hudson Valley location in the town of Montgomery, NY, which is a hydro-powered winery, restaurant, outdoor concert venue and private events space at the historic Montgomery Mills.

Reflecting on his participation in the City Winery experience, Gruen shared, “Music allows people the freedom to express their feelings loudly in public, and in my work, I strive to capture these moments of expression. City Winery’s commitment to providing a platform for such freedom and joy mirrors the essence of my photography. It’s an honor to have my work contribute to the City Winery experience.”

Bob Gruen: Rock Seen is a retrospective that spans Gruen’s remarkable 50-year career, featuring legends from Tina Turner to Green Day. The exhibit predominantly showcases silver gelatin photo process prints alongside archival pigment prints, highlighting the evolution of rock photography. Notably, the exhibition includes two silkscreen print versions of Gruen’s John Lennon photos, created by Gary Lichtenstein Editions, capturing Lennon at the Statue of Liberty and during rehearsals at the Fillmore East for his Madison Square Garden show.

The exhibition’s opening reception is scheduled for March 3rd, aligning with Theatre Within’s Acoustic Lennon benefit concert. This special night will feature performances by esteemed artists such as Ms. Lisa Fischer, Jimmy Vivino, Willie Nile, and David Broza, among others. The concert, in support of charitable organizations benefiting music education and writing, underscores City Winery’s commitment to the arts and community engagement.

Bob Gruen: Rock Seen invites enthusiasts and the public to explore the depths of rock and roll history through Gruen’s lens.
