Just a short drive from historic Stratford-Upon-Avon lies Billesley Manor Hotel and Spa; a luxury retreat steeped in history: it’s here Shakespeare penned his famous comedy ‘As you like it’ and even married his wife, Anne Hathway, in the 11th century church-All Saints of Billesley-which lies in the grounds. The perfect escape to the country and a great base for exploring Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire and beyond, we spend a sunny friday evening at Billesley Manor Hotel & Spa.
THE BILLESLEY MANOR HOTEL & SPA EXPERIENCE
The drive into Billesley Manor left us instantly feeling relaxed and as if we were in an 18th century novel. The manor is housed in vast grounds, complete with a striking fountain and beautiful topiary gardens (styled in the shape of a giant chess set as a nod to Alice and Wonderland).
5 minutes after arriving, we were sat in the extensive grounds sipping a g&t made from local mulberry gin and already feeling more relaxed. Bliss.
The inside of the hotel offers just as much delight as its exterior: the As You Like it lounge has an impressive drinks menu and plenty of plush cosy chairs to curl up in with a glass of wine or cup of tea. If relaxing is on your to do list, the manor hosts an extensive gym, a 12 meter pool with cushioned loungers and a range of treatments-including Decleor Facials.
THE ROOMS AT BILLESLEY MANOR HOTEL & SPA
We stayed in the Manor House Deluxe Bedroom and as soon as we open the door to the room we were hit by feelings of grandeur: the large, double windows showcase the amazing garden views and bring stunning light into the open space.
The rooms are as spacious as many suites: two tropical print armchairs make a real statement against the more traditional decor.
The bathroom is a real gem: hugely spacious (you could probably fit another bed in there-not that we tried!) with a generous bathtub (the tap-free design a nice modern touch) and double sink unit. The supplied super soft waffle dressing gowns were also another lovely touch.
DINING AT BILLESLEY MANOR HOTEL & SPA
The dining space at Billesley Manor isn’t huge but the intimate Stuart Restaurant, which features original 16th century oak panelling, makes a great first impression. There’s not a huge amount of variety (with a choice of five starters and seven mains) but the menu is centred around quality ingredients that are locally sourced.
We opted for the Soup of the day (asapragus and broccoli) with fresh baked rolls (£6.95) and the fresh, clean smoked salmon (£9.95) for starters. Dinner was the trout (inventively served with samphire and purple potato (£24.00) and the rump lamb (with mash and whipped goats cheese) (£32). The quality of the ingredients shone through: with the trout crispy yet buttery, whilst the lamb was ‘melt-in-your-mouth tender.’
VERDICT
Billesley Manor is a must visit for anyone who wants to get away from it all. Whether you visit for the great food, stunning surroundings or the chance to immerse yourself in the past, you won’t be disappointed.
