Last summer I was fortunate to experience an extraordinary journey along Alaska’s Seward Highway, a magnificent route that winds its way from the vibrant city of Anchorage to the charming coastal town of Seward. As a passionate nature enthusiast I was delighted to visit this breathtaking landscape, where towering mountains, sparkling glaciers, and abundant wildlife await at every turn. The journey from Anchorage to Seward is 127.1 miles and can take just 2 hr 26 min by car, but we recommend taking your time and stopping off overnight half-way to really maximize your time in this part of the United States and enjoy the scenery.

Rent a Car
For the adventurous traveler who craves the freedom to explore at their own pace, hiring a car and driving yourself from Anchorage to Seward is an excellent choice. We chose this option and found that rental car agencies abound in Anchorage, offering a wide selection of vehicles ranging from sleek sedans to rugged SUVs. You’ll have the flexibility to make impromptu stops along the way, whether it’s to snap photos of a majestic moose or to stretch your legs at a scenic overlook. Just be sure to plan ahead, especially during the winter months, and check road conditions before setting out on your journey.
Scenic Train Journey
For a truly unforgettable experience, consider indulging in a scenic train journey aboard the Alaska Railroad’s Coastal Classic route. Departing from Anchorage’s historic train station, this iconic rail journey takes you on a breathtaking ride through the rugged wilderness of the Chugach National Forest, offering unparalleled views of towering mountains, pristine rivers, and expansive glaciers along the way. Relax in the comfort of the train’s luxury dome cars, complete with panoramic windows and onboard dining options, as you traverse the stunning landscapes of Alaska’s south-central region. The downside to this option is you won’t be able to stop whenever you want.
Day 1: Anchorage to Girdwood
Our journey began in the bustling city of Anchorage, where the majestic peaks of the Chugach Mountains beckoned us onward. After a leisurely breakfast at South Restaurant, we set out on the Seward Highway, eager to immerse ourselves in the splendor of the Alaskan wilderness.
As we left the city behind, the scenery began to change, with rugged mountains giving way to sweeping valleys and crystal-clear streams. Our first stop along the way is Beluga Point, just a short drive from Anchorage. Here, we paused to admire the panoramic views of Cook Inlet, keeping a keen eye out for the telltale spouts of beluga whales in the waters below.
Continuing on our journey, we soon arrived at Portage Glacier, a magnificent testament to the power of nature. Here, we boarded a boat for a close-up view of the glacier’s icy blue hues, marveling at the thunderous roar of calving ice. For the truly adventurous, helicopter tours are also available, offering a bird’s-eye view of this awe-inspiring spectacle.
As our stomachs begin to rumble, we made our way to the charming town of Girdwood, nestled at the base of Mount Alyeska. Here, we indulged in a sumptuous lunch at the renowned Double Musky Inn, where Cajun-inspired cuisine takes center stage. From perfectly seared steaks to mouthwatering seafood dishes, every bite is a testament to Alaska’s culinary prowess.
With satisfied appetites, we set out to explore the natural wonders of Chugach State Park, a pristine wilderness teeming with adventure at every turn. Hiking enthusiasts will delight in the network of trails that crisscross the park, offering breathtaking views of cascading waterfalls, lush forests, and snow-capped peaks. For those seeking a more leisurely experience, a ride on the Alyeska Resort tram provides unparalleled vistas of the surrounding landscape, with the option to enjoy a gourmet dinner at the mountaintop restaurant.
As the day draws to a close, we retire to the luxurious comforts of the Alyeska Resort, our home away from home in the heart of Girdwood. Here, we unwind with a soak in the hot tub, savoring the crisp mountain air and the soothing sounds of nature all around us. With plush accommodations and world-class amenities at our fingertips, we drift off to sleep, dreaming of the adventures that await us on the road to Seward.
Day 2: Girdwood to Seward
Rising with the sun, we bade farewell to Girdwood and set out once again on the Seward Highway, our hearts brimming with anticipation for the wonders that lay ahead. Our first stop of the day was Bird Point, a breathtaking overlook that offers panoramic views of Turnagain Arm and the surrounding mountains. Here, we took a moment to breathe in the crisp mountain air and soak in the Alaskan wilderness.
Continuing on our journey, we made our way to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a sanctuary for native Alaskan wildlife that is a delight for animal lovers of all ages. Here, we observed majestic grizzly bears, playful moose, and graceful caribou in their natural habitat, learning about the center’s efforts to preserve and protect these iconic species for future generations.
We paused for a scenic picnic lunch close to Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center beside the tranquil waters of Kenai Lake, surrounded by towering mountains and verdant forests. With the sounds of nature as our soundtrack. With renewed energy, we pressed onward to our final destination: the picturesque town of Seward, nestled at the head of Resurrection Bay. Here, we enjoyed a thrilling glacier cruise through Kenai Fjords National Park, where towering glaciers calved into the sea. From breaching humpback whales to playful sea otters, the sights and sounds of the park are nothing short of awe-inspiring, leaving us with memories to last a lifetime.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we return to Seward. We strolled along the charming waterfront promenade, taking in the sights and sounds of this vibrant coastal town. Stay at the Seward Harbor 360 Hotel for charming luxury on the You’ll see the Seward Small Boat Harbor and Resurrection Bay if you book a Harborside room, or the Kenai Mountains if you book a Mountainside room.
Day 3: Enjoy Seward in One Day
Seward is a tiny, idyllic town flanked by snow-capped mountains and situated directly on Resurrection Bay, and one day really is the perfect amount of time to spend here. Start your day with a boat trip around Resurrection Bay from Seward. The local boat companies offer trips from 3.5 hours to full day tours. We recommend the shorter, half-day tours. Seeing Alaska’s scenery from the water is truly an experience like no other. When you return, enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Seward Waterfront Park pathways, which offer panoramic views of Resurrection Bay and the surrounding mountains.
The walk leads you to the Alaska SeaLife Center, a world-class marine research facility and aquarium that offered a glimpse into the fascinating underwater world of Alaska. The SeaLife Center is well worth a visit and really is a fascinating place to spend some time. Finish your day in Seward with dinner at Ray’s Waterfront (open from mid-April through end of September). This short-but-sweet Alaskan roadtrip is nothing short of an extraordinary adventure. From the rugged beauty of the Seward Highway to the tranquil shores of Resurrection Bay, every moment of this coastal expedition is memorable.
